How To Make Solar And Wind Power

With global population forecast to continue to rise we will have increasing demand for a finite resource. The result is continuing increases in the cost of producing energy since the major means of production – that is coal, gas and petroleum – account for nearly 85% of the source of energy. People are now looking to alternative methods either on a large scale (wind farms/solar farms etc) or a more humble scale in the back yard, on the farm or on top of the office building. There is an increasing concern for the environment and people are becoming concerned about their energy consumption and ‘doing the right thing’ with regard to energy usage in the home or elsewhere and seeking renewable energy solutions such as from wind or solar methods.

The whole idea of tapping into natural resources such as the sun and wind has captured the imagination of more and more people in recent years since by using it you do not deplete it. More often you will find Governments prepared to offer tax breaks and other financial incentives to assist people interested in renewable energy solutions; some are even legislating to ensure that only homes that come up to a ‘Green Standard’ may be sold – new or old…wow!
Renewable energy technologies may be applied to domestic situations and provide substantial energy cost reductions. Some experts have suggested that reductions of 80% or even elimination could be achieved. Some energy authorities allow surplus energy generated in this way to be resold to the grid as well.

I started looking at this when I moved into a new town house in the city with a roof garden with sun on it all day – in the hottest driest state in the driest continent on earth!

However the more I investigated, I was put off by the hard sell of solar energy and wind power companies who told me how much I could save by spending thousands – and their offer included the Government rebate. It was monstrous; all I wanted was a discreet panel on the roof and a turbine. The total was about $14000 – that’s after the rebate! After assessing my energy usage at $500 per quarter and a saving of 50% it would take me 14 YEARS to recoup the investment – leaving out the time cost of money.

It is possible to build a wind generator and solar panel grid fairly easily and for much less than the sums quoted above (most of it was commission!). Most of the materials required are obtainable from a local hardware store. This is why I decided to investigate further. I don’t have a particularly DIY mind – BUT I was passionate about doing the right thing.

By spending a small sum – around $200 – 250 you could reduce your energy bills and do the right thing by the environment. Michael Harvey, a smart renewable energy enthusiast will take you through the whole process in a way that makes it easy to understand. For non DIY’ers like me it was a huge help too.
